Don't miss: the historic city center

Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George

Originally the seat of the Order of the Knights of St. George and St. Michael, it was once a British governor's palace and a summer residence for the Greek royal family. Today, it houses the Asian Art Museum. The palaces are located above the small Faliraki, with its small beach perfect for a morning swim. It's also an ideal spot for a summer evening cocktail overlooking the illuminated fort.

Campiello

Continue into Campiello, the oldest and most atmospheric district, with its labyrinth of narrow cantounia, carved wells, picturesque squares and tall buildings with balconies often decorated with pots and ropes. Admire the Venetian well opposite the Panagia Kremasti church and the Metropolitan church.

The Dionysios Solomos Museum

Heading north, you'll find a museum dedicated to the Greek national poet Dionysios Solomos, whose Hymn to Freedom was adapted into the Greek national anthem. The house in which he lived, wrote and died was destroyed during the Second World War, but has now been restored and turned into a museum.

The New Fortress

From here, it's a short walk west to the New Fortress (the 16th-century Venetian Fortezza Nuova), which was once linked to the Old Fortress by a wall.

The Jewish Quarter

Returning to the coastal road, you walk down Xenofontos and Velissariou streets, which flank the west side of the old town, to the synagogue. Corfu's Jewish community, which dates back to the 12th century, was persecuted during the Nazi occupations but played an important role in the island's history and daily life. The region boasts some excellent tavernas.

The walk ends at the church of Agia Sophia at the bottom of Velissariou, from where you turn left into Evgeniou Voulgareos street and walk to the 14th-century Annunziata (you'll recognize it by its bell tower). The Ionian Parliament and Spianada Square are just a few minutes away.
